The transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy is not just about technology—it’s about people. That was the key message at the COMMIT Interreg Conference, held in the IJmond region, where stakeholders from across Europe gathered to discuss how to equip the workforce with the green skills needed for the future.

Hosted at Tata Steel, the event brought together policymakers, businesses, and experts to explore strategies for workforce development in emerging green industries. Entra-Lab was proud to take part in this important discussion, contributing insights on reskilling, inclusive employment, and sustainable job creation.

Key Takeaways from the Seminar:

  • Reskilling for Green Industries: The transition to Green Steel and other sustainable industries requires not only technological advancements but also large-scale workforce reskilling. The Just Transition Fund is playing a crucial role in bridging this gap, but further efforts are needed to prepare employees for specialised roles in the evolving job market.
  • Best Practices for a Just Transition: From job carving at Soci-Com to initiatives supporting women in technical fields, successful projects demonstrate that reskilling and workforce inclusion must go hand in hand. Investing in people strengthens economic resilience and fosters innovation.
  • Policy & Investment: With €58.5 million from the Just Transition Fund, IJmond is making significant investments in green skills, innovation, and inclusive job creation. However, ensuring that SMEs and marginalised groups benefit from these opportunities remains a challenge. Cutting bureaucracy, fostering partnerships, and enhancing accessibility to funding are key steps forward.
  • The Road Ahead: The transition to a sustainable economy is fundamentally about people. Governments, businesses, and social partners must collaborate to ensure technology is an enabler, not a barrier. By investing in adaptability, green skills, and public-private partnerships, we can build a workforce ready for the future.

Entra-Lab remains committed to supporting sustainable job creation and ensuring that all workers, regardless of background, have access to the opportunities of the green transition.
