We are proud to announce an exciting collaboration between Columbia University – Climate School and University of Western Macedonia 🌍⚡
This spring, students from both institutions are coming together through a joint Summer School dedicated to exploring the evolving climate and energy landscape in Greece. Over the course of two intensive weeks — in Kozani and Athens — participants will engage directly with the realities, challenges, and opportunities of one of Europe’s most emblematic transition regions: Western Macedonia.
The programme combines academic learning, field visits, interdisciplinary dialogue, collaborative project work, and direct interaction with policymakers, industry leaders, local communities, and energy stakeholders. It is designed around one core idea: understanding the energy transition not only through theory, but through lived regional experience.
The initiative will culminate in the international conference “The Evolving Climate and Energy Landscape in Greece”, hosted at the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation on May 25–26, where students will present their reflections and insights from the field alongside distinguished speakers from government, academia, industry, and innovation ecosystems.
We are especially honoured that Stavros Papastavrou and Georgios Stassis — together with international academics, startup founders, and energy experts — will contribute to this dialogue on the future of climate and energy transitions.
This is what international, hands-on, place-based climate education looks like. 🎓🌱⚡
And perhaps more importantly — this is what meaningful academic collaboration across borders can achieve.
